Rediscovering Joy: Healing Through Grief

Writer: Shaina NewsomeShaina Newsome

Waves crash, then retreat. Memories, like tides, recede. My heart aches with the sea...

Grief is not linear; like ocean waves, it can be gentle and soothing, but at other times, it can be crashing and overwhelming.

The Uniqueness of Grief

No two individuals experience grief in the same manner. Some may find comfort in routine, while others feel the need to break away from normalcy. It is crucial to acknowledge that your grieving process is valid, whether it manifests in tears, laughter, or moments of silence.

Grief is a process of letting go and learning to accept and live with loss, whatever that loss may be. Loss can involve various aspects of life, such as the death of a loved one, loss of a job, divorce, a serious illness, losing a pet, moving to a new home, a breakup, financial loss, loss of independence due to disability, the end of a friendship, or the loss of a cherished possession. The time it takes to navigate grief varies from person to person.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross describes five general stages of grief:

Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance

These stages are not linear and may come and go, as grief is not meant to be packaged neatly.

Coping Strategies: Navigating the Waves of Grief

As we navigate the complexities of grief, it's essential to find coping strategies that resonate with our individual experiences. Here are some suggestions that might help:

  1. Seek Support: Surrounding yourself with understanding friends, family, or support groups can provide comfort. Sharing your feelings and memories can lighten the emotional load.

  2. Create a Ritual: Lighting a candle, planting a tree, or writing a letter can be a meaningful way to process your grief.

  3. Express Yourself: Writing, art, or music can serve as powerful outlets for your emotions. Journaling about your feelings or creating something inspired by loss can aid in the healing process.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Engaging in mindfulness or meditation can help ground you during overwhelming moments. Focusing on the present can provide relief from spiraling thoughts.

  5. Embrace the Journey: Allow yourself to feel all emotions, from joy to sorrow. Lament. It is okay to smile or to feel moments of happiness amid your grief.

  6. Professional Help: Speaking with a therapist or counselor about grief can provide additional support and coping strategies tailored to your needs.
