The flower associated with the name is the Adey Abeba, symbolizing transformation and growth. While living in Ethiopia, Desta founders Jimmy and Rachel Gross would purchase these flowers from street vendors, using them as a reminder that the rainy season was ending and spring was on the horizon. Just like the Adey Abeba, the journey of healing and rediscovering joy is gradual, unfolding and blooming beautifully over time.

What's a Counseling Intern?
A Counseling Intern is a therapist-in-training completing their practicum or clinical internship. They work under the supervision of a licensed clinical supervisor and receive guidance from their professors. Counseling Interns also participate in regular training and consultation sessions with licensed clinical psychologists and other mental health professionals at Desta. Their internship is a requirement for completing their postgraduate degree and though still in training, Counseling Interns are competent to see clients and often offer services at reduced rates.

The name was chosen to reflect our mission to help individuals reclaim joy and live fully in the moment.
The images below were taken in Ethiopia during a 9-year child reunification project led by Desta founders Jimmy and Rachel Gross, capturing joyful events when missing children were reunited with their families.
